The medieval Arabic and Coptic scholars identified the city with ancient Phragonis, although the archeological findings point out to Kom al-Khawaled 7 kilometers east of Sidi Salem. Sidi Salem is situated 8 km north of Maşrif al ‘Ajūzayn.
