The village, set in a small valley at the southern foot of the eastern Balkan Mountains, is an architectural reserve of national importance consisting of more than 200 wooden houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period, and a tourist destination. Zheravna is situated 7 km north of Ichera.

As of 2019, the mayor is Vesselin Urunov of the GERB party and the population of Gradets is 2,434, which makes it the second most populous village in Bulgaria, after Aydemir, Silistra Province, and the most populous in Bulgarian Thrace. Gradets is situated 8 km east of Ichera.
