The town is named after its founder, Bahlul Khan Lodi, the future Sultan of Delhi who renamed the town in 1443 C.E. during his time as governor of Punjab, and was also mentioned in the Ain-e-Akbari. Sultanpur Lodhi is situated 10 km south of Talwandi Chaudhrian.
