Upokongaro or Ūpokongaro is a settlement adjacent to the Whanganui River, located 12 kilometres upriver from Whanganui, New Zealand, in the Makirikiri Valley. Upokongaro is situated 3½ km southwest of Matatara Stream.

Hamlet
Kaiwhaiki is a settlement 18 kilometres upriver from Whanganui, New Zealand. Kaiwhaiki in the 1840s was a small pā of a two to three dozen people. In Ronaldson's 1847 survey, the inhabitants were noted as being of the hapū Ngāti Rongomaitawhiri. Kaiwhaiki is situated 6 km west of Matatara Stream.

Parikino was originally a fortified settlement established in 1845 as security against a possible raid by a Ngāti Tūwharetoa taua. Parikino is situated 7 km north of Matatara Stream.
