Elmina Castle was erected by the Portuguese in 1482 as Castelo de São Jorge da Mina, also known as Castelo da Mina or simply Mina, in present-day Elmina, Ghana, formerly the Gold Coast.

Fort Coenraadsburg or Conraadsburg, also Fort São Tiago da Mina, is a small fort situated opposite the Elmina Castle in the Central region of Ghana, built around a Portuguese chapel for Saint Jago, to protect Fort Elmina from attacks.

Elmina is a city in Coastal Plain region of Ghana. Its name comes from the Portuguese word for "Mine". The gold found in these mines are also the origin of the name "Gold Coast", which was the name of what is now Ghana, when it was a British Colony.
