Atuona, located on Atuona Bay on the southern side of Hiva Oa island, French Polynesia, is the administrative centre of the commune of Hiva-Oa. Atuona was the capital of all the Marquesas Islands but it has been replaced by Taioha'e. Atuona is situated 8 km north of Canal du Bordelais.

Vaitahu is the name of a bay and valley in western Tahuata. It is the location of the most important village on the island. Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña landed here on 21 July 1595 and named the town Madre de Dios. Vaitahu is situated 9 km southwest of Canal du Bordelais.
