Designed by noted architect William Tinsley, the cemetery was established in 1869, and features curvilinear and contoured drive paths and radial burial arrangements. River View Cemetery is situated 1½ miles west of Woolper Creek.

The island is named after Archibald Lochry, the leader of an ill-fated group of Pennsylvania militiamen who were attacked near the island by Native Americans in 1781 during the American Revolutionary War, a battle known as Lochry's Defeat. Laughery Island is situated 2 miles southeast of Woolper Creek.
