It is best known for its role in the War of 1812, when it successfully defended Baltimore Harbor from an attack by the British navy from Chesapeake Bay on September 13–14, 1814. Fort McHenry is situated 2 miles northwest of Fort McHenry Anchorage.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was a highway bridge that crossed the lower Patapsco River and outer Baltimore Harbor/Port. It was opened on March 23, 1977, to carry the Baltimore Beltway between Dundalk and Hawkins Point. Francis Scott Key Bridge is situated 2½ miles southeast of Fort McHenry Anchorage.
