They are the only remnants of the extinct settlement of Kelly's Ferry. Kelly’s Ferry Cemetery is situated 2½ miles east of Browns Lake.

After Indian Removal, European-American settlers moved in and later named it after James Anderson Whiteside, attorney, Chattanooga railroad promoter and land investor. Whiteside is situated 3 miles southwest of Browns Lake.
