It is a deeply stratified village site spanning the precontact era from the late Archaic to an Oneota occupation, with a particular concentration of Woodland period ceramics. Mountain Lake Site is situated 2 miles southeast of City of Mountain Lake.

Mountain Lake is a city in Cottonwood County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,999 as of the 2020 census. Mountain Lake was initially composed mostly of the 1,800 Low German speaking Mennonites from Russia who settled there between 1873 and 1880.
