An abandoned lighthouse, the Pilot Island Light, rests on the island, and three shipwrecks rest in the Pilot Island NW Site. Pilot Island is situated 2 miles east of Nine Foot Shoal.

The building's design is similar to Pottawatomie Light on Rock Island, but is made of brick instead of stone. Pilot Island Light is situated 2 miles east of Nine Foot Shoal.
