Smelter Mountain is part of the La Plata Mountains range which is a subset of the Rocky Mountains of North America. It is located in the Bodo State Wildlife Area, 1.2 miles southwest of the community of Durango in La Plata County, Colorado, United States. Smelter Mountain is situated 1½ miles northeast of Peacock Mine.

Lake Nighthorse is a reservoir created by the 270 feet high Ridges Basin Dam southwest of Durango in La Plata County Colorado. As part of the Animas-La Plata Water Project, Lake Nighthorse provides water storage for tribal and water right claim-holders along the Animas River. Lake Nighthorse is situated 1½ miles south of Peacock Mine.
