It is named after Coleman Wheeler, who opened a sawmill in the town and had a lumber business; Coleman is a great-grandfather of Ted Wheeler, who was mayor of Portland, Oregon, from 2017 to 2024. Wheeler is situated 3 miles northwest of Dry Creek.
