The community is named for the Usibelli Coal Mine; located near the community, the mine is the chief economic enterprise in the area. Usibelli is situated 3½ miles southwest of Coal Creek.

It lies off the George Parks Highway south of the city of Anderson, and on the northeastern edge of Denali National Park and Preserve. Suntrana is situated 5 miles west of Coal Creek.
