Trail is a small city of 7,700 people in the West Kootenays region of interior southeast British Columbia. The city is about 10 km north of the USA border at Waneta and about 25 km from Castlegar, a town also on the Columbia River.

Warfield is a village at the bottom of the Rossland hill, immediately west of Trail, in the West Kootenay region of southern British Columbia. Warfield is situated 2½ km northwest of West Trail.
