Springfield is a small town in the foothills of the Torlesse Range on the way to the Craigieburn ski fields and Arthur's Pass. It was an important source of coal for Christchurch and later became an important staging post to service the stage coaches travelling to the West Coast.

Whitecliffs is a village located in the Selwyn District of the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It has also been known as South Malvern, and the name of Whitecliffs comes from terrace cliffs above the Selwyn River / Waikirikiri. Whitecliffs is situated 9 km south of Dalethorpe.
