Parikino was originally a fortified settlement established in 1845 as security against a possible raid by a Ngāti Tūwharetoa taua. Parikino is situated 2½ km northeast of Whanganui River.

In Ronaldson's 1847 survey, the inhabitants were noted as being of the hapū Ngāti Rongomaitawhiri. Kaiwhaiki is situated 6 km southwest of Whanganui River.
