The library's main building is located in the historical Clementinum building in the centre of Prague, where approximately half of its books are kept. National Library of the Czech Republic is situated 370 metres east of Charles Bridge.

Built in the 9th century, the castle has long served as the seat of power for kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman emperors, and presidents of Czechoslovakia.
