The South Shetland Islands are a group of Antarctic islands located in the Drake Passage with a total area of 3,687 km2. They lie about 120 kilometres north of the Antarctic Peninsula, and between 430 and 900 km southwest of the nearest point of the South Orkney Islands. Square End Island is situated 2½ km east of Sinbad Rock.

Villa Las Estrellas is a Chilean civilian settlement on King George Island, the largest of the South Shetland Islands off the Antarctic Peninsula. It consists of some dozen prefabs but is a vital service hub for all the bases on the island.

It is located at Fildes Peninsula, an ice-free area, in front of Fildes Bay, at the west end of King George Island, South Shetland Islands. President Eduardo Frei Montalva Base is situated 7 km southeast of Sinbad Rock.
