Claflin University is a private historically black liberal arts college in Orangeburg, South Carolina, United States. Founded in 1869 after the American Civil War by northern missionaries for the education of freedmen and their children, it offers bachelor's and master's degrees. Claflin University is situated 1,000 feet southwest of Claflin University Science Center Annex.

This town that started as a trading post between settlers and Native Americans in 1704 became a hotbed of tension and activism during the Civil Rights movement, culminating in the infamous Orangeburg Massacre on February 8, 1968 when local police opened fire and killed three students and injured many others.
