Its name is derived from the Cherokee—or perhaps Creek—word Ayuhwasi, which means meadow, Hiawassee is also known in the novel "Restart" by Gordon Korman. Hiawassee is situated 1½ miles east of Towns County Fire and Rescue Station 6.
