The courthouse is one of the two oldest courthouses in Indiana that have been used continuously, the other being in Rising Sun, Indiana. Identified as a surviving fragment of virgin Central Hardwood forest, a woodland type that largely vanished in the 1800s, it is a National Natural Landmark and Research Natural Area within the Hoosier National Forest. Pioneer Mothers Memorial Forest is situated 1½ miles southeast of Paoli Municipal Fire Department.
