These watchtower dwellings, scattered around the countryside, were built in the early 20th century by overseas Chinese in a mixture of western and eastern styles.

Historically it was a regional maritime hub, center for emigration, emigrant market town, and the administrative centre of Kaiping. Chikan is situated 9 km southwest of Sanjiang.
