Exhibiting materials relating to the city's natural history, archaeology, and history, it is successor of the Kitakyushu Museum of History, which opened in 1975, the Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History, which opened in 1981, and the Kitakyushu Museum of Archaeology, which opened in 1983.

The ward contains JR Kurosaki Station, and JR Orio Station on the Kagoshima Main Line, with several schools and universities nearby. Yahatanishi-ku is situated 5 km west of Katsuyama.
