Situated on the shore of the Strait of Gibraltar, the town began as a fishing village and trading hub when it was settled approximately 2,000 years ago. Baelo Claudia is situated 3½ km east of Playa de los Alemanes.

It is noted for its excellent beaches, an outdoor cinema, and la Iglesia Del Carmen church where, curiously, tuna were butchered and salted. Zahara de los Atunes is situated 5 km northwest of Playa de los Alemanes.
