It is the upper terminus of the Rheineck–Walzenhausen mountain rack railway line of Appenzell Railways. Walzenhausen railway station is situated 650 metres east of Walzenhausen, Sonnenberg.

The station is located on the eastern edge of Rheineck village centre, with the A1 motorway, the Alter Rhein river channel and then the border with Austria flanking the opposite side of the station. Rheineck railway station is situated 1½ km north of Walzenhausen, Sonnenberg.
