Opened in 1878, it is adjacent to the northern portal of the Simplon Tunnel and is served by two standard gauge lines. Brig railway station is situated 490 metres west of Brig, Aletschstrasse.

It is the meeting point of two 1,000 mm metre gauge railway lines of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, the BVZ Zermatt-Bahn and the Furka Oberalp Railway.
