It dates mainly from the 13th century and contains many Byzantine-era Albanian Orthodox churches in the area and Ottoman-era mosques. Berat Castle is situated 120 metres southwest of St. John the Evangelist.

The museum is located inside the Church of the Dormition of St Mary in the castle quarter Berat. Onufri Iconographic Museum is situated 120 metres west of St. John the Evangelist.
