Karaganda is a large city in the Central Highlands of Kazakhstan. It's a coal mining city and in Soviet times its population was much greater: Stalin deported ethnic Germans from the Volga region to use as forced labour here as well as in Siberia. Temirtau is situated 8 km southwest of Ostrov Zhanaaul.

Ghabiden Mustafin, previously until 2002 Tokarevka, is a town in Karaganda Region, Kazakhstan, with a population of 3,997. Tokarevka lies upon the Nura River, some 30 km north of the provincial capital, Karaganda. Ghabiden Mustafin is situated 10 km east of Ostrov Zhanaaul.
