It is situated between the villages of Molinis and St. Peter, both within the municipality of Arosa, though slightly nearer to Molinis. St. Peter-Molinis railway station is situated 2½ km south of Mataun.

The Hochwang is a mountain of the Plessur Alps, located between the valleys of Schanfigg and Prättigau in the canton of Graubünden. With a height of 2,534 metres above sea level, it is the highest summit of the chain lying west of Durannapass. Hochwang is situated 3 km north of Mataun.
