Banjul

Banjul is the capital of and its fourth largest city. The city is on an island, which has constrained its size - its population is only 31,000. Consequently much of the population now is based on the mainland between the airport and the city.

is a commemorative arch on the road into Banjul in . It was built in 1996 to mark the military coup d'état of 22 July 1994, through which Yahya Jammeh and his Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council overthrew the democratically elected Gambian government of President Sir Dawda Jawara.
