Eastern Switzerland

Eastern Switzerland is a region in Switzerland. It spans the cantons of Schaffhausen, Thurgau, St. Gallen, both Appenzell and Glarus. It shares a border with Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein and overlaps with the Lake Constance region.

Glarus

The canton of Glarus is a canton in east-central Switzerland. The capital is Glarus. The population speaks a variety of Alemannic German. The majority of the population identifies as Christian, about evenly split between Protestants and Catholics.

Saint Gallen

Saint Gallen is the main city of eastern Switzerland. For travellers, its main draw is the centuries old Abbey of Saint Gall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a world famous historic library.

Schaffhausen

Schaffhausen is a city in north-eastern Switzerland on the river Rhine, next to the German border. Its prime tourist attraction are the Rhine Falls, Europe's largest waterfalls.

Appenzell

Appenzell is a village, though considered as a town by the FSO, and the capital of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden in Switzerland. Appenzell has no municipal government of its own; rather, the different parts of Appenzell belong to and are governed by the districts Appenzell and Schwende-Rüte.

Stein am Rhein

Stein am Rhein is a town in the eastern part of Switzerland. It is situated on the river Rhine, at the western end of Lake Constance. It is famous for its medieval town centre, including many half-timbered houses and frescoes.

Sargans

Sargans is a municipality in the Wahlkreis of Sarganserland in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Sargans is known for its castle, which dates from before the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291.

Rapperswil

Rapperswil is a city that borders Northeastern Switzerland & Central Switzerland and lays direct at the end of Lake Zurich and Obersee. Rapperswil merged lately with the city of Jona and is a picturesque town and popular destination for hikers, bikers and families at the weekend in the vicinity of Zurich.
