Kajaani
Kajaani is a town and municipality in Finland and the administrative capital of the Kainuu region. It lies south-east of Oulujärvi, which drains to the Gulf of Bothnia along Oulujoki.
Kuusamo

Kuusamo is a town and a municipality of same name in Northern Finland. The high season for tourism is the winter when people head to the Ruka skiing resort 20 km north of the town.
Pudasjärvi

Pudasjärvi is a town and a municipality of Finland. It is located in the province of Oulu and is part of the Northern Ostrobothnia region, 87 kilometres northeast of the city of Oulu and 130 kilometres southwest of the town of Kuusamo.

Suomussalmi is a municipality in Finland located in the Kainuu region about 90 kilometres northeast of Kajaani, the capital of Kainuu and 120 kilometres south of Kuusamo.

Kuhmo is a town and a municipality in Finland and is located at the south-eastern corner of the Kainuu region. The municipality has a population of 7,413 and covers an area of 5,456.78 square kilometres of which 649.97 km2 is water.
Ruka

Ruka is a ski resort and village near Kuusamo in the Oulu province of northern Finland. Rukatunturi's highest point is 492 m. The longest run in the mountain is 1,300 m.
Taivalkoski
Taivalkoski is a municipality of Finland, it is located in the Province of Oulu and is part of the Northern Ostrobothnia region. The municipality has a population of 3,624 and covers an area of 2,650.66 square kilometres of which 212.59 km2 is water.
Sotkamo
Sotkamo is in Kainuu. The municipality is best known for the Vuokatti ski resort, 7 km from the town proper.

Paltamo

Vaala
Vaala is a municipality in Finland. It is located in the North Ostrobothnia region. Established in 1954, the municipality has a population of 2,567 and covers an area of 1,764.04 square kilometres of which 461.45 km2 is water.
Utajärvi
Utajärvi is a municipality of Finland. It is located in the Northern Ostrobothnia region next to the border of the Kainuu region, and is part of the former province of Oulu.
Ristijärvi

Ristijärvi is a municipality of Finland. It is part of the Kainuu region. The municipality has a population of 1,162, which makes it the smallest municipality in Kainuu in terms of population.
Hiidenportti National Park

Hiidenportti National Park is in the region of Kainuu in northern Finland. It features the Hiidenportti gorge and old-growth forest. Close by is the Peurajärvi Recreational Area, which is a good family destination with easy trails and beaches suitable for children, and also is a fishing destination.
Vuolijoki

Vuolijoki is a former municipality in Finland. The municipality was consolidated with the city of Kajaani in the beginning of year 2007. Vuolijoki was located in the province of Oulu on the shores of Lake Oulujärvi, and was part of the Kainuu region.
