Ann Arbor—often abbreviated as AA or A2—is a picturesque city surrounding the University of Michigan. It has a strong bent toward the arts, and an attractive and pedestrian-friendly downtown.

is the region of Michigan closest to and the province of . Although the name is commonly used to mean "the area", and the state's megalopolis is an important presence, it contains considerably more than the Motor City.

is roughly the westernmost third of the "palm" of the Lower Pensinsula of Michigan. It includes most of the Lake Michigan shoreline, as well as the nearby cities and towns, farmland, and woodland.

The is a region of Michigan. It is not connected to the rest of the state, but is connected at its southwestern end to . Therefore, in general the is located much closer to , and the neighboring state of Wisconsin than with the Lower Peninsula, separated by a small channel connecting Lakes Michigan and Huron.

should not be confused with the . Although a bit inaccurate, the term "Northern Michigan" is used to refer to only the northern portion of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan… the "fingers" of that mitten-shaped body of land.
