Monument Valley is perhaps the most famous example of the classic American West landscape. In the close to the border of and , the valley has been the backdrop for many movies and advertisements, ranging from Marlboro cigarette ads to the films of John Ford to Back to the Future 3, Forrest Gump and Easy Rider.

is a butte located in Monument Valley and is part of the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, similar to its neighbors just to the north. It was named after silver miner Jack Merrick, killed by Native Americans in 1880.
