It was part of a larger complex called the "Green Palace", an imperial residence of the eighth Jebtsundamba Khutughtu, who was later proclaimed Bogd Khan, or ruler of Mongolia. Bogd Khan Palace Museum is situated 2 km east of Эрэл.
