Lyon – Mont Verdun Air Base is located to the northwest of Lyon. It is a center for air defense operations transferred to the site from the now-deactivated headquarters of the French Air Force at Taverny Air Base – BA921 near Paris, with an underground alternate strategic command center hardened against chemical and nuclear attack. Lyon – Mont Verdun Air Base is situated 670 metres southeast of Fond Grimaud.

Fort Mont Verdun is the biggest highlight of the second belt of Forts around Lyon and is the only one considered to be a mountain fort. It rests at 630 meters altitude, dominating Lyon, Limonest, the lower Azergues valley and the Saône valley. Fort du Mont Verdun is situated 1 km south of Fond Grimaud.
