The name indicates an aboriginal Valachian population, confirmed as both Vlah in Slavonic and Oláh in Hungarian mean Romanian; the origin is confirmed even by the Germanic name, Lambsdorf, given the main occupation of the Middle Ages Romanians. Vlachovo is situated 5 km southeast of Dobšiná.
