The park opened on 15 August 1843 and is the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world, after Dyrehavsbakken in nearby Klampenborg, also in Denmark. Tivoli Gardens is situated 370 metres southwest of Grand Teatret Cafe.

The Grand Theatre, located in Mikkel Bryggers Gade, a small side street off Strøget, is one of the oldest cinemas in Copenhagen, Denmark. The cinema is based in the rear side of the Palace Hotel complex on City Hall Square.
