The spot was named after the River Ilse, which rises on the highest mountain in the Harz, the legendary Brocken, and flows through the romantic Ilse valley to Ilsenburg. Princess Ilse is situated 330 metres southwest of Historischer Luftschutzstollen am Bothofeisen.
