This station was given this name because the Jungnang River, a tributary of the Han River, flows to the west of this station, and also because it is located in the Jungnang-gu district. Jungnang is situated 1¼ km northwest of 면목.

The station was Seoul's main distribution center of charcoal briquettes in the 1950s and 1960s, extracted and manufactured in southern Gangwon province. Mangu station is situated 1¼ km north of 면목.
