The museum itself is on the site of the former Bungo Kokubun-ji, the provincial temple of Bungo province. Ōita City Historical Museum is situated 190 metres east of Bungo-Kobuku.

Bungo Kokubun-ji is a Buddhist temple in the Kokubu neighborhood of the city of Ōita, Ōita Prefecture Japan. It belongs to the Tendai sect, and its honzon is a statue of Yakushi Nyōrai. Bungo Kokubun-ji is situated 300 metres east of Bungo-Kobuku.
