Northern Nevada consists of dry, mountainous, sparsely populated landscapes. Most of the towns are dotted along the Humboldt River, Interstate 80, and the railroad, all of which cut across this part of from west to east, running next to each other for much of the way.

is a city in and the county seat of , United States. As of the official 2020 U.S. Census, the city has a population of 20,564. serves as the center of the , a region with a population of over 55,000.

is a small city in that got its start as a station on the first transcontinental railroad. It's now a hub for mining, freight traffic, and other activity in northern Nevada, and it also has enough to pique a visitor's interest: mountain landscapes, casinos, vestiges of the Old West, and a proud Basque heritage.

, is an ephemeral town that exists for only one week each year, during Burning Man, a radical arts festival. At its maximum occupancy, the town has about 60,000 citizens and a post office, an emergency services crew, a volunteer police department, roads, houses, bars, clubs, restaurants, and hundreds of art installations and participatory "theme camps".
