San Juan de Nicaragua is a municipality located in the department of Río San Juan, in south-eastern Nicaragua. Positioned at the mouth of the along the , it lies along the border with and is one of the most isolated municipalities in the country, accessible primarily by river or air.

is a municipality in the Río San Juan department of . The first settlement in the area, to the east of the current location, was known as "Las Aldeas" and was founded between the years 1850 and 1855.

is a town in Rio San Juan department of . Since 1995, the fortress has been on a "tentative list" of important Nicaraguan cultural sites with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as a preliminary to nomination for consideration as a World Heritage Site.
