The Maxwell Wildlife Refuge in , consists of 2,574 acres of mostly mixed grass prairie. Bison and elk inhabit the refuge. The McPherson State Fishing Lake adjoins the refuge and adds another 260 acres of protected area, including a 46 acres lake.
