The institution, run by the district of Leer, describes itself as a "place of remembrance and commemoration, for exhibitions and cultural events on Jewish life then and now." It is housed in the school building used from 1909 to 1939 by the former Jewish community of Leer. Former Jewish School is situated 680 metres east of Lidl.
