Col du Tourmalet is one of the highest paved mountain passes in the French Pyrenees, in the department of Hautes-Pyrénées. Sainte-Marie-de-Campan is at the foot on the eastern side and the ski station La Mongie two-thirds of the way up.

The Giant of Tourmalet, frequently nicknamed Octave in honor of Octave Lapize, the first rider to cross the Col du Tourmalet in the Tour in 1910, is a monumental sculpture created by Jean-Bernard Métais and installed for part of the year at the Col du Tourmalet in France. The Giant of Tourmalet is situated 340 metres south of Bareges-tourmalet.
