The predecessor of the school was established in 1886 as a monastic school for Shingon Buddhist monks, and it was chartered as a university in 1926. Koyasan University is situated 280 metres southeast of Kongobu-ji.

Reihokan Museum is situated 380 metres southwest of Kongobu-ji.
