Located on the Black River, Milford was founded in 1808 and was a busy timber milling center until approximately 1900 and was the capital of Marysburgh Township before township restructuring and ultimately amalgamation into Prince Edward County.

It is the county's largest community and former seat located at the southwestern end of Picton Bay, a branch of the Bay of Quinte, which is along the northern shoreline of Lake Ontario. Picton is situated 9 km north of Milford Distribution Station.
