It was founded in 1809, closed amid persecutions in 1939, and from 1944 to 1989 was the country's only active monastery. Gandantegchinlen Monastery is situated 1½ km north of Тэс Петролиум ШТС.

It was part of a larger complex called the "Green Palace", an imperial residence of the eighth Jebtsundamba Khutughtu, who was later proclaimed Bogd Khan, or ruler of Mongolia.
